Consulting Services

English: Félix is a bilingual creative professional from Guayaquil, Ecuador. He is based in New York City, where he works in private philanthropy resourcing feminist movements around the world and as an independent filmmaker supporting the production and distribution of authentic and accountable storytelling.

He has over 15 years of experience in filmmaking, philanthropy, and arts administration, collaborating with organizations that support multidisciplinary artists and organizations, including the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, North Star Fund, Detroit Narrative Agency, Tribeca Film Institute, New Orleans Film Festival, and the Open Society Foundations. He is a queer trans filmmaker who documents the preservation of LGBT historical spaces, champions activists who catalyze social change, and disrupts the insidious narratives that deny the humanity of marginalized communities. Félix is Co-Chair of the Board of Working Films, an organization that brings together documentary filmmakers and grassroots activists to advance social justice. In his philanthropic work, his experience supporting grantee partners is extensive and all-encompassing.

Felix is available for consulting services on a wide variety of subjects. He has particular expertise in supporting queer and trans filmmakers as producer for various award-winning films that have screened at prestigious venues around the world. He has been involved in all aspects of the making of a film project: research and development, production, post-production, and distribution and outreach. He’s also adept at advising cisgender ally filmmakers working on trans-themed films, and those services have included reviewing narrative and documentary scripts; providing insightful notes on works-in-progress projects; and sharing referrals of trans editors and crews.

Cisgender filmmakers have been capitalizing on the high media visibility of trans people, and are being resourced to make film and television about trans communities. Some trans artists have made inroads, but they are mainly white, male/masculine, able-bodied, English-speaking, and located in the Global North. Cisgender filmmakers will continue to produce trans representation on screen, so Félix’s consulting works to interrupt potentially harmful narratives by coaching cisgender filmmakers on how to offer images that are authentic and accountable to trans communities. Félix’s intervention occurs at all levels of the production process, and so the learning will be extended to funders, producers, network executives, distributors, and film festival programmers, among others implicated in the amplification pipeline.

In March 2023, Félix served as one of the creative advisors for the Sundance Institute's Trans Possibilities Intensive, a fellowship that nurtures trans filmmakers. On Transgender Day of Visibility (March 31), the Hollywood Reporter published his guest column op-ed arguing for the imperative of championing meaningful and authentic queer and trans storytelling.

Félix is also an organizational development coach for grantees of the Transgender Strategy Center, providing support to trans-led organizations and groups based in the U.S. seeking to strengthen their administrative, strategic, and cultural infrastructure. Previous groups he has supported include Cake Society (Maryland) CK Life, (New York), Miss Major’s House of GG (Arkansas), Trans formative School (New York), Triumphant 2Gether (Florida), and True Self Foundation (Puerto Rico).

Testimonials:

"Through his work with NewFest, Félix has been a wonderful and versatile collaborator--whether serving on the jury for our New York Short Film Award, reviewing submissions on NewFest’s screening committee, or moderating a post-film Q&A. Félix’s sharp eye and spirited energy, which balance insight with candor, have provided significant impact through his support of LGBTQ film and, in particular, authentic trans-focused stories and emerging artists." - Nick McCarthy, Director of Programming, NewFest

“Félix’s feedback on a cut of BORN TO BE (DIR: Tania Cypriano), a doc focusing on the Mount Sinai Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery that I executive produced, was so thoughtful and constructive—and that much more valuable in that it was coming from the perspective of a trans filmmaker. Félix came into the material with an open mind but was focused, candid and incisive in their feedback, which was particularly welcome at that last stage in the film’s editing. And the questions Félix posed around broader questions of trans representation as it related to the film were ones that provided much valuable food for thought as we finished the film and later moved into the sales and marketing phase.” - Susan Norget, Film Publicity & Marketing Consultant/Executive Producer

“I have been incredibly lucky to work with Félix over the past five years. As a consultant to the Human Rights Watch Film Festival on highly under-represented issues that have the potential to mis-inform, mis-represent or harm progress in a particular field of progressive activism, Felix's expertise on documentary ethics and film industry responsibility has proven incredibly helpful for us in determining how films may challenge or uphold particular tropes or stigmas. His focus and attention on under-represented and rapidly evolving themes and topics such as trans sex work in Brazil, to LGBT rights in the United States has provided a key perspective in an era where reliable information can be difficult to source and deep knowledge is of particularly high value.” - Leah Sapin, Associate Director, Programming and Production, Human Rights Watch Film Festival

“I first met Félix in 2012 when he helped guide me from development to post-production for my first film “I am Isak,” and now through my current project, “Trans in Trumpland.” The skill that sets Félix apart from other consultants is his multidisciplinary approach through his experience in private philanthropy, activism, directing, and a strong commitment to diversity. Félix is incredibly giving of his time, a rare asset that results in high levels of success for the clients with whom he works. I value Félix's insight and will continue to work with him in the future.” - Tony Zosherafatain, Director, TRANS IN TRUMPLAND, (premiere, early 2021)
